Il Viaggio di Marco a Italia

The Dolomites

A Dolomite

Another Dolomite. The Dolomites are the mountain range separating Italy from Austria. They used to be a coral reef (100 million years ago) and were pushed upward (2000-3000 meters) over time. When the Ice Age came along, the coral eroded in interesting ways resulting in the Dolomites' unique appearance. De Dolomieu, a Frenchman, discovered this, and so the mountains are named after him.

The bridge to our hostel: a renovated mining camp

And the hostel!

No wait. This is the hostel. It was much nicer than the ruins, but just about as drafty!

Mark And Monica

The Dolomite we hiked up the next morning. We never saw it.

It mostly looked like this all day, only worse.
