Il Viaggio di Marco a Italia

Rome: Vittorio Emmanuale Monument

The Vittorio Emmanuale monument is actually a modern Roman building - built to commenerate the 50th anniversary of a united Italy. It's called the Altar of the Fatherland, though apparently, most Romans don't much care for it feeling it is overdone and gaudy. They call it the "wedding cake" building. Still, it is pretty impressive to look at and you can see much of Rome from the top of the steps.

The monument is 200 feet high and 50 feet wide.

Victor Emmanual II was the first king of the united Italy.

The first set of steps...

And the third (of four). That's me in the lower right. I need a haircut (badly).

I believe this is Victor on the horse.

Victor up close.

The inside is a museum with a couple of nice pieces.

And from the top, you can see much of Rome. Rome has seven hills in it and over 900 churches. From here, you can see 10 domes.
