Mountain Lake Conservancy Orienteering Course

The sport of orienteering involves using a topographic map and a compass to find 3-sided orange and white markers (called controls) that are placed out in the woods at specific locations.

This course is located at Montain Lake near Pembroke, Virginia (directions). It consists of six colored routes from a 4 control WHITE beginner course to a 24 control BLUE long advanced course.

All you need to walk/run a course is the orienteering course map, a control clue card and a compass. You also might want to bring some water and food.

Here are the courses and some statistics about each one.

Each of the controls now also has an orienteering punch (small stapler) attached to it. Rather than writing down word, you can "punch" the appropriate box on the control card. Here's the answer key for the punch patterns.

The point is to have fun in the woods, but there are competitions all over the world.
With that in mind, you can record your starting and ending times (on the control card) and submit them by email to have them recorded and displayed here: course times.

Oh, and if you want to check your answers, here's the answer key to what words are on each control.

If you discover any problems (missing controls, inaccuracies, etc), please email me and let me know. Good luck!
