Mark's Bio

I began my racing career as a runner. Since high school, I've done countless road races and five marathons. I started doing triathlons in college. In the 1990's, I took up kayaking and long distance hiking, and in 2000, I bought my first mountain bike.

I had competed in a dozen or so mountain bike races when I discovered adventure racing in the fall of 2000. My first race was in a 12 hour race in the mountains of North Carolina. Since then, I competed in dozens of adventure races around the country ranging in length from 6 hours to over 5 days. In 2003 (to improve my navigation skills), I took up orienteering and rogaining. I also got involved with Ambush Adventure Sports helping out with races and even putting on a 12 hour race in my home town of Blacksburg, VA.

In 2004, I did over 20 races including a solo effort at the 5 day 2004 Beast of the East. In October 2005, I teamed up with Jason and Jen at the Beast Of The East. We have been training and racing together since then.
