Jen Marsh was on Team Endeavor. They were set to do the Beast, but lost a team member a couple weeks before the race. So, Joy Marr of Odyssey gave them Mark's name as a substitute. He was going to race the Beast solo, so he just joined the team. Viola! Back to 4 people. But, then disaster struck the night before the race. Another man dropped out. So, the day of the race, the team split apart again. Jen and Tim would race as a duo and Mark would race as a solo again.
Ahh, but fortune smiled again. Ronny Angell, the race director, told us that a soloist was coming in from Montana and we could ask him to round out our team. Well, Jason Magness showed up in the peace-love-be happy car. He was from North Dakota not Montana, but we called him Montana anyway. He agreed to join Team Endeavor. Back to a foursome!
From those humble beginnings, Mark, Jason, and Jen met and with Jason's twin brother Andy, they formed Jen's Men to compete in the 2006 Primal Quest adventure race. With alternate Sam, they have been preparing via training weekends, shakedown races (the Endorphin Fix), and tons of email bantering (with a tad of productivity thrown in).
Now, Mark is in Colorado near Salida for 4 weeks training in the BIG mountains (every day - up to the continental divide at 11500' on foot or mountain bike). "Hey, there's still lots of snow up there!"
Jason and Sam arrive on June 5th, and Andy and Jen arrive on June 16th. Then, the real fun will begin! For 1 week, we will organize gear and figure out some racing logistics - whitewater swimming gear, who paddles with whom?, and other things we should have figured out long ago.
The 2006 Primal Quest starts in the Utah desert on June 22nd (race check in and skills test) and the gun goes off on June 24th. 95 teams are competing for the $100,000 first prize. The race ends 10 days later on the 4th of July.
Then comes the great gear unsorting and creative packing day to get everything home.
