First of all, I can hardly be called an adventure racer as this is
only my second race - both this one and the first both happened on
account of my brother Jason's keen interest in the sport. My
earliest adrenaline experiences however, did contribute significantly
to my involvement in all the activities that will have hopefully
prepared me for this race (at least mentally) Jason and I grew up
all over the world as my dad was in the armed services. We were
swimmers from early on, but not very good at it and didn't like it
much. But we loved the idea of adventure and got heavily into
dungeons and dragons using our imagination to get into all sorts
of extreme situations. I loved all the planning and equipment
(imaginary of course) and the epic nature of it all. In high-school
we still played all the time, but began to actually do a bit of
outdoor stuff as well. We took a 3 day 26 mile hike when we were 14
in Alaska which was our
first real overnight outdoor experience. By the time we were seniors
in high-school we had taken a course in mountaineering and were
hooked. We left for college in Oklahoma (scholarship) convinced that
we would spend the rest of our lives honing this skill.
